A Captives Resolve …

A Captives Resolve …

Joseph could have given up hope and fallen into despair. After-all, what was left for him in this world? His brothers had betrayed him, his father thought he was dead, sold as a slave to a foreign nation, only to be lied and maligned about which round him up in the king’s dungeon. A slave. A foreigner, and now a prisoner. Though having done nothing wrong he was serving a sentence he did not deserve, with no end in sight. You would think with Josephs situation a little self-pity may be in order.

Yet we read that Joseph did the exact opposite of what is humanly reasonable, which is what makes a true hero. He chose to trust God and serve the needs of those around him.
We read that he noticed the faces of two fellow inmates who had fallen out of the kings good graces. If Jospeh had been wallowing in his own self-pity, he could very well have left them to wallow in theirs. After all, what did Jospeh have to offer these dejected men. He too was a prisoner enduring the same fate and circumstances unjustly. But instead he chose to look to the needs of others and serve, knowing that though he may be lost to his father and to the world, he was by no means lost to His Heavenly Father. God knew exactly where he was and Joseph chose to trust His plan, even if that meant serving Him in a desolate dungeon.

No doubt a true hero is one who rises above his circumstances to serve the needs of others. The next time you’re struggling and wondering what reason there is to go on, choose to look outward to the needs of someone else, and watch as the Lord helps you overcome your own pain as you serve the needs of another.

Determine to trust the Lord with your life, even when you don’t know what the future holds. This life was not meant to be lived for oneself, but rather to be given away, sacrificially. Christ gave us an example that we might follow in His footsteps. Choose to be a hero and strive today to overcome the evil that you see with good.

Romans 12:21 — Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
